The United States and Iran have engaged in military strikes, marking the first confrontation since a ceasefire agreement was reached on June 15. Both nations accused each other of violating the terms of the memorandum of understanding (MoU) signed by US President Donald Trump and Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian.
The escalation centers on control of the Strait of Hormuz, a vital global energy route. Iran had previously blocked the strait in response to the US-Israeli conflict, using it as leverage in negotiations.
President Trump described the US attack as a "foolish violation" of the ceasefire, noting that US forces intercepted three drones during the coordinated assault. Iran did not confirm the attack but issued a warning through the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), stating that future aggression would elicit a more extensive response.
Bahrain's Foreign Ministry condemned an alleged Iranian drone attack, labeling it a serious breach of sovereignty and international law. The UK Maritime Trade Operations reported that a tanker was struck by an unidentified projectile, although all crew members were reported safe.
The IRGC had previously warned against alternative routes in the waterway, asserting that only routes approved by Tehran could ensure safe passage.
The Iranian foreign ministry condemned the US strikes, asserting they violated the MoU and the UN Charter. Iran maintains that it controls the Strait of Hormuz, which has become a significant bargaining chip in its negotiations with the US and Israel.
Tehran has expressed intentions to impose tolls on vessels passing through the strait, a proposal rejected by the US and Gulf nations.
Analysts suggest that the recent military actions could jeopardize the MoU, with Trita Parsi of the Quincy Institute stating that the strikes are placing the agreement under considerable stress. Both sides have a vested interest in avoiding further escalation, as the situation remains delicate.
The ongoing tensions highlight the precarious balance of power in the region, with the potential for further conflict looming.
