North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has never mentioned his mother, Ko Yong Hui, in public during his 15 years in power. This secrecy is significant as it relates to the legitimacy of his regime, which is closely tied to the 'Mount Paektu' bloodline, a lineage linked to the mythical founder of Korea.
The narrative surrounding this bloodline is crucial for the Kim dynasty's claim to authority.
Ko Yong Hui was born in Osaka, Japan, in 1952 to parents from Jeju Island, South Korea. Her family emigrated to North Korea when she was about ten years old, part of a larger movement of approximately 93,000 Koreans who relocated between 1959 and 1984.
This resettlement was promoted by the North Korean government, which promised a better life, including free healthcare and education.
Initially viewed positively for bringing goods from Japan, these migrants, known as 'jjaepo', faced social stigma in North Korea, classified as part of the 'wavering class' within the country’s strict social hierarchy.
Analysts note that the regime's narrative surrounding the Paektu bloodline makes the idea of Kim Jong Un being the son of a 'jjaepo' unimaginable, as the Paektu lineage is considered sacred.
Ko caught the attention of Kim Jong Il, who was already married, due to her talents as a dancer. Reports suggest that Kim Jong Il fell in love with her, leading to three children, though their relationship was never officially recognized by the regime.
This situation placed Ko in a precarious position, as children born out of wedlock face severe stigma in North Korea.
After Kim Il Sung's death, Kim Jong Il became the supreme leader, and Ko assumed a prominent role, often accompanying him on military inspections and social events. Despite her influence, she was never publicly acknowledged as part of the Kim family, and her children remained largely hidden from the public eye.
The lack of recognition from Kim Il Sung and the absence of public appearances with her children highlight the complexities of her status within the regime.
