Ireland stunned world champions India with a remarkable 34-run victory in the first T20 international at Stormont, Belfast, marking their first senior international win over India in cricket. This victory is particularly significant as it ended Ireland's winless streak against India, which spanned nine T20 matches and twelve encounters across all formats.
In their innings, Ireland posted a total of 182 runs for the loss of nine wickets. Key contributions came from new captain Lorcan Tucker, who scored 50 runs off 36 balls, and Gareth Delany, who added 49 runs from 32 balls.
The Irish batting lineup demonstrated resilience, particularly in the face of a strong Indian bowling attack.
India's response began with a promising start, as Abhishek Sharma scored 50 runs off just 20 balls. However, the Irish bowlers quickly regained control of the match. Debutant Matthew Hollard was instrumental, taking three wickets for 28 runs, while fellow debutant Jai Moondra contributed with two wickets for 26 runs.
India ultimately fell short, being dismissed for 148 runs in 18.5 overs, leaving seven balls unused.
The match attracted over 4,000 spectators, many of whom were eager to witness the debut of 15-year-old batting sensation Vaibhav Sooryavanshi. However, India opted to hold him in reserve and chose to bowl first, a decision that did not pay off as Ireland capitalized on their batting opportunity.
After the match, Hollard expressed his excitement about debuting against such a formidable opponent, stating, "I never expected this, to have a debut against India it’s a dream come true." He also shared that his family traveled from Johannesburg to support him, emphasizing the personal significance of the match.
The two teams are set to face each other again at Stormont on Sunday, with the match scheduled to begin at 13:30 BST, providing Ireland another opportunity to build on this historic victory.
