DC Studios Aims to Rebuild Trust with Supergirl Release

DC Studios is working to regain fan trust with the release of Supergirl, which debuts this week. The film, featuring Milly Alcock, Jason Momoa, and Eve Ridley, is part of a rebooted cinematic universe following last year's successful Superman.

Peter Safran, co-head of DC Studios alongside director James Gunn, stated that the new direction aims to "get back on track" after a series of underperforming films. Supergirl follows Kara-Zor-El, played by Alcock, on her 23rd birthday as she embarks on a quest to save her poisoned dog, Krypto.

The film portrays Supergirl as a reluctant hero struggling to adapt to life on Earth after fleeing Krypton. Directed by Craig Gillespie, it has received mixed reviews, with praise for Alcock's performance but criticism of its action sequences.

At the London premiere, Safran acknowledged the studio's uneven output, noting that while some films have been successful, others have flopped or been canceled, such as Batgirl. He expressed a desire to rebuild audience trust, which he believes has been lost over the years.

Safran and Gunn are focused on creating a unified vision for DC's characters, which include Batman and Wonder Woman. He emphasized the importance of healthy competition with Marvel, stating, "What unites comic book fans is much greater than that which divides us." The studio plans to release a supervillain horror movie, Clayface, later this year.

Fans at the premiere, like Jesse Figueiras Osorio and his sister Nathalia, expressed hope for the reboot. Jesse noted that the previous portrayal of characters did not meet expectations but praised Gunn's vision. He acknowledged that trust in DC had diminished but remains optimistic about the studio's future.
