Mercedes driver George Russell claimed pole position at the Austrian Grand Prix, finishing ahead of Ferrari's Charles Leclerc by 0.236 seconds. The result came amid controversy as Russell set his lap time while yellow flags were displayed due to a crash involving Red Bull's Max Verstappen.
Verstappen lost control at a high-speed corner, crashing into the barrier. Russell, who was running behind Verstappen, insisted he had slowed sufficiently for the incident, noting that only a single yellow flag was shown. He stated, "I had a big lift.
I went into the corner 0.5 seconds up and I came out 0.25 seconds up. It was great to get that lap." Team principal Toto Wolff confirmed that everything was fine regarding the yellow flag situation.
The late drama in the qualifying session was triggered by Verstappen's crash, which occurred at the penultimate corner. Prior to the incident, Ferrari's Leclerc and Mercedes' Lewis Hamilton had completed their laps, with Leclerc finishing 0.059 seconds ahead of Hamilton.
Hamilton had made a mistake on his first run, locking a brake at Turn Three, which forced him to abort that lap and adjust his strategy for the final attempt.
Russell's teammate, Kimi Antonelli, finished fourth after backing off on his final lap, which left him nearly two seconds slower than his previous run. McLaren drivers Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri secured sixth and seventh places, respectively, while Verstappen's initial lap was good enough for fifth despite the crash.
The top ten was rounded out by Red Bull's Isack Hadjar and Racing Bulls drivers Liam Lawson and Arvid Lindblad. The qualifying session highlighted the competitive nature of the teams, with Ferrari and McLaren showing strong performances, particularly before the late incident that reshaped the grid.
