Dan Burn's Journey from Supermarket to England World Cup Squad

Dan Burn, a member of Thomas Tuchel's World Cup squad, began his football journey in 2009 at New Ferens Park in the northeast of England.

This artificial pitch marked a significant turning point in his career after he was called up to the Clubs for Young People representative side, despite having been released by Newcastle United's Centre of Excellence several years earlier.

At that time, Burn was playing football for enjoyment while also working in a supermarket. Alan Watson, the England National Association of Boys club manager, recognized his potential during a series of trials and selected him for a team of unsigned players for a home nations tournament.

Watson noted, "A lot of lads get released, like Dan was, but they are still good players. We used to tell them, 'As one door closes, we will open another. You will be selected for England.'"

Burn's impressive performances during the tournament caught the attention of coaches, including Craig Liddle, then head of youth development at Darlington. Liddle compared him to legendary defender Tony Adams, predicting that Burn would one day play for England.

He was particularly struck by Burn's size and technical skills, expressing surprise that no club had signed him earlier.

After progressing at Darlington, Burn moved to Fulham in 2011 but was released a few years later. He rebounded with stints at Wigan and Brighton before returning to Newcastle United, where he played a crucial role in the team's success.

Notably, he scored the opening goal as Newcastle ended a 70-year wait to win a major domestic trophy by defeating Liverpool in the EFL Cup final in 2023.

Burn made his England debut shortly after the cup win and has since become a key player under Tuchel, who is focused on building a strong team dynamic. Acknowledging his role in the squad, Burn remains prepared to contribute whenever needed during the World Cup, showcasing his determination and resilience throughout his career.

His journey from working in a supermarket to the World Cup is a testament to his hard work and dedication.
