On June 27, 2026, an Israeli drone strike in Khan Younis, Gaza, resulted in the deaths of at least two Palestinians, including a young girl, and left four others injured. This attack occurred despite a ceasefire that designated parts of southern Gaza as safe zones for displaced individuals.
Medical sources reported that the drone targeted two makeshift tents in the al-Mawasi area, located west of Khan Younis. Gaza’s civil defense teams were deployed to the site, recovering seven injured individuals who were subsequently transported to Nasser Hospital and the Red Cross Hospital for treatment.
In a separate incident, a 10-year-old Palestinian boy named Walid Youssef Abu Jazar succumbed to injuries sustained from an earlier Israeli bombardment in southern Gaza. He died days after being wounded in an Israeli strike on al-Mawasi.
According to Al Jazeera’s Tareq Abu Azzoum, Israeli military actions have continued unabated despite the ceasefire. He emphasized that the al-Mawasi area was designated as a safe zone for thousands of Palestinians under the terms of the ceasefire, highlighting the ongoing risks faced by civilians.
The targeting of children has come under renewed scrutiny following a United Nations report that indicated children make up approximately 30 percent of those killed in Gaza since October 2023.
Children’s rights advocate Rachel Accurso criticized the lack of global action, stating, “We are watching children who are just like our own try to survive a genocide.”
Gaza’s Health Ministry reports that Israeli military operations have resulted in at least 73,043 Palestinian deaths and 173,417 injuries since October 2023. Since the October 2025 ceasefire, the ministry has documented 1,031 Palestinian deaths and 3,309 injuries attributed to Israeli actions.
