Venezuela Faces Crisis as Earthquakes Leave 920 Dead and Thousands Missing

Rescuers in Venezuela are racing against time following two powerful earthquakes that struck on June 24, resulting in at least 920 confirmed deaths and over 51,000 people reported missing. The magnitude 7.2 and 7.5 quakes devastated the coastal area around La Guaira.

Authorities restricted access to La Guaira on June 26, citing traffic chaos that hampered search efforts. With a shortage of government rescue teams, local residents have resorted to digging through rubble by hand, as aid agencies warn that the critical 72-hour survival window is closing.

Officials announced that anyone wishing to enter the affected area must obtain official permits, although details on who would be allowed in remain scarce. Reports indicate a lack of state rescue teams in the hardest-hit regions, despite government claims of a robust response.

“Each person saved is a miracle,” stated Jorge Rodriguez, president of the National Assembly. Acting President Delcy Rodriguez emphasized that her government is mounting a full response during these critical hours and welcomed international rescuers and humanitarian aid.

As the death toll is expected to rise, many missing individuals may be unaccounted for due to communication issues. The number of injured has surpassed 3,300, with authorities reporting 243 rescues. The International Organization for Migration estimates that up to 6.76 million people could be affected, including two million in Caracas.

Experts noted that the destruction was exacerbated by the quick succession of shallow quakes. Loyce Pace, the International Red Cross regional director for the Americas, remarked that “people are still terrified to re-enter what were their homes.”

Venezuelan authorities reported that 861 volunteers from countries including Mexico, the US, and Colombia are currently in the country, with more assistance on the way.
