The US military conducted strikes on Iranian targets after President Donald Trump accused Iran of violating a truce following an attack on a cargo ship in the Strait of Hormuz.
The incident occurred on Thursday when the Singapore-flagged vessel Ever Lovely was struck by a one-way attack drone, prompting a planned evacuation of sailors in the region.
In response to the drone attack, US Central Command (Centcom) reported on Friday that it targeted missile and drone storage facilities as well as coastal radar positions in Iran. Centcom described the strikes as a "powerful response" to what it termed unwarranted aggression against commercial shipping.
The statement emphasized that Iran's actions violated the ceasefire and undermined freedom of navigation in this vital international trade corridor.
President Trump, when asked if the US would retaliate against Iran, cryptically stated, "you'll see." He expressed discontent over the drone attack, asserting that such actions should not be taken by Iran. Meanwhile, Centcom reiterated its commitment to ensuring safe passage for commercial vessels transiting the strait.
The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) condemned the US strikes, claiming they violated commitments made under a previous agreement. The IRGC warned that any further aggression would elicit a more extensive response. Additionally, the IRGC accused Israel of violating a ceasefire in Lebanon, highlighting the broader regional tensions amid ongoing conflicts.
The Strait of Hormuz has been a focal point of conflict, with Iran effectively closing the waterway following US and Israeli attacks that began at the end of February. This closure has led to a spike in global oil prices and disrupted shipments of essential commodities, including fertilizers.
On June 17, the US and Iran had agreed to a 14-point memorandum of understanding aimed at reducing hostilities, which included provisions for the safe passage of commercial vessels without charges for 60 days. However, tensions remain high, with both sides accusing each other of violations.
In a post on X, Vice-President JD Vance stated that if Iran had disagreements about the memorandum's application, they could communicate directly, but emphasized that violence would be met with violence.
The cargo ship Ever Lovely was reportedly struck 7.5 nautical miles southeast of Oman’s port of Dahit while following the recommended route from the UK Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO). The ship's owner, Evergreen, confirmed that no casualties were reported from the incident.
