Steve Clarke has resigned as head coach of the Scotland national football team following their exit from the World Cup. The announcement was made shortly after Croatia's victory over Ghana on Saturday, which confirmed Scotland's elimination from the tournament.
Scotland began their World Cup campaign with a narrow 1-0 win against Haiti in Boston. However, their subsequent matches were disappointing, as they lost 1-0 to Morocco and suffered a significant defeat, 3-0, against Brazil in Miami. These results ultimately led to their early exit from the competition.
In a heartfelt letter to supporters, Clarke reflected on his time as manager, stating, "The most emotional part of this goodbye is for my players, without whom we wouldn’t have had any of the memories that we’ve accumulated from 2019 until now." He emphasized the importance of his players, adding, "They deserve all
the praise and adulation that they receive and it was truly an honour to be called their Gaffer.
Thanks for having me and good luck to my successor."
Clarke took over as Scotland's head coach seven years ago, during a period when the national team had not reached a major finals since the World Cup in 1998. Under his leadership, Scotland qualified for two European Championships and made it to this summer's World Cup.
Despite these achievements, the team struggled to perform in the finals, with the victory against Haiti being their only win across all three tournaments.
Before facing Brazil, Scotland was in a position to qualify as one of the best third-placed teams in the competition. However, defensive mistakes ultimately undermined their chances, leading to their disappointing exit from the World Cup.
