Iran's national football team drew 1-1 with Egypt in their final group-stage match at Seattle Stadium on June 26, 2026.
The result leaves Iran awaiting the outcomes of other matches to determine their advancement to the round of 32, marking a significant moment in their World Cup history as they seek to progress beyond the group stage for the first time.
The match was fraught with tension, particularly after Iran appeared to secure a victory with a stoppage-time goal from Shojae Khalilzadeh. However, the goal was disallowed following a VAR review that ruled it offside by a narrow margin. This incident added to the challenges faced by the Iranian team throughout the tournament.
Coach Amir Ghalenoei expressed his frustration regarding the treatment of his team, urging FIFA President Gianni Infantino to address the issues encountered by Iran during the tournament. He stated, “It was the host that wasn’t very good to us,” highlighting the need for fair treatment of all participating teams.
Ghalenoei's remarks reflect a broader sentiment among the players regarding their experiences in the World Cup.
The match coincided with Seattle's annual PrideFest, although no official Pride activities were observed at the stadium. Outside the venue, hundreds of supporters of Reza Pahlavi, a prominent dissident of the Islamic Republic, gathered peacefully, contributing to a charged atmosphere leading up to the match.
Iran fell behind early in the match with a fifth-minute goal from Egypt but managed to equalize just nine minutes later. Despite their efforts, including a shot that struck the crossbar, they could not secure a win.
Team captain Mehdi Taremi described the World Cup experience as a “disaster,” citing logistical challenges such as visa issues for some of the team's staff and the absence of Iranian media at matches and press conferences.
After the match, Ghalenoei expressed pride in his players, commending their resilience in the face of adversity.
He noted that despite the difficulties, the team has performed admirably, stating, “What these young people, these players have done, it should be written in history.” In a gesture of gratitude, the team left a handwritten note in their dressing room thanking Seattle for its hospitality and acknowledging the support from their fans.
