On June 27, 2026, President Donald Trump nominated Lance Schroyer<\/a>, a former Oklahoma state trooper, to serve as the director of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).<\/p>\n

Schroyer, who has 29 years of law enforcement<\/a> experience and served as a US Marine, is expected to lead the agency during a time of heightened scrutiny regarding its operations.<\/p>\n

Schroyer\u2019s nomination follows the interim leadership of Venturella, who had been serving since May after Todd Lyons stepped down. Lyons had been with ICE since 2007 and cited a desire to spend more time with his family as his reason for leaving.<\/p>\n

Lyons' departure came amid significant criticism of ICE's tactics, which have included allegations of excessive force and violations of civil liberties. Notable incidents contributing to this scrutiny include the shooting death of Renee Nicole Good during an enforcement operation in Minnesota.<\/p>\n

Furthermore, ICE agents were accused of breaking into a Minnesota home without a warrant, wrongfully detaining US citizen Chongly Scott Thao, and an ICE agent was arrested following the non-fatal shooting of Venezuelan immigrant Julio Sosa-Celis, raising serious concerns about the agency's practices.<\/p>\n

As of this year, at least 19 individuals have died in ICE custody, prompting calls for accountability. On June 24, UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Turk emphasized the need for authorities to be held accountable for these deaths.<\/p>\n

In Congress, Democrats have previously refused to fund ICE without reforms aimed at improving oversight and preventing excessive use of force.<\/p>\n

Schroyer\u2019s nomination comes during a broader shakeup within the Trump administration, which has seen multiple cabinet officials depart. Notably, since 2017, ICE has not had a Senate-confirmed director.<\/p>\n
