Iran and the United States<\/a> have exchanged attacks in the Gulf, raising fears that a ceasefire agreement signed on June 17 is unraveling. Iran\u2019s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) claimed responsibility for hitting US sites in retaliation for US strikes on Iranian missile, drone, and radar facilities.<\/p>\n

These US attacks were described as a response to an alleged Iranian drone attack on a cargo ship in the strategically important Strait of Hormuz<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The US Central Command (CENTCOM) stated that its operations targeted Iranian missile and drone storage sites, as well as coastal radar positions, characterizing these actions as necessary to counter what it termed \u201cunwarranted aggression against commercial shipping.\u201d The situation escalated further when Iranian state television reported an explosion at Taheroui pier in Sirik, attributed to a projectile impact.<\/p>\n

However, it was noted that Sirik Port was operating normally and no damage was reported to its facilities.<\/p>\n

US President Donald Trump condemned the Iranian drone attack, labeling it a \u201cfoolish violation\u201d of the ceasefire agreement. Vice President JD Vance issued a stark warning, stating that any further Iranian aggression would be met with violence. In response, the IRGC indicated that if US aggression continued, their retaliation would be broader in scope.<\/p>\n

The exchange of fire has raised significant questions regarding the viability of the ceasefire agreement, which both nations have accused each other of violating. This agreement was intended as a precursor to further negotiations concerning traffic through the vital Strait of Hormuz, a crucial waterway for global trade.<\/p>\n

Despite the rising tensions, oil prices have fallen sharply, reflecting market hopes that traffic through the Strait will continue to recover. However, the recent attack on the Singapore-registered vessel Ever Lovely has reignited hostilities. Additionally, Israel's military actions in Lebanon have further complicated the fragile ceasefire.<\/p>\n

The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has emphasized the necessity for robust safeguards in any final US-Iran settlement to prevent Tehran from developing nuclear weapons.
