Following two powerful earthquakes that struck Venezuela on June 26, 2026, international aid<\/a> has been mobilized to assist in rescue and recovery efforts. The earthquakes, measuring 7.2 and 7.5 in magnitude, resulted in at least 235 fatalities and over 4,300 injuries, according to Venezuelan authorities.<\/p>\n

The United Nations and various countries across the Americas, including Brazil, Canada, Mexico, Colombia, El Salvador, Cuba, and the United States, are sending search and rescue teams along with humanitarian aid.<\/p>\n

UN aid chief Tom Fletcher expressed determination to ensure help reaches those affected, stating, "To the Venezuelan people, to those whose loved ones are under the rubble, know that we are determined that help gets to you."<\/p>\n

Venezuela<\/a>'s acting President Delcy Rodriguez confirmed that UN-certified rescuers would assist in locating survivors. Jorge Rodriguez, head of the national assembly, reported that approximately 200 individuals remain trapped, and around 250 buildings have been damaged or destroyed nationwide.<\/p>\n

The U.S. has pledged a comprehensive response, including deploying warships, transport planes, and helicopters, alongside mobilizing $150 million in aid. Secretary of State Marco Rubio emphasized that the response would be "big, fast, and effective." Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva announced plans to send a field hospital and a humanitarian search and urban rescue mission, along with 36 firefighters and equipment.<\/p>\n

El Salvador's President Nayib Bukele stated that his country is readying 300 rescuers and 50 tonnes of essential supplies. Cuba has mobilized health workers to provide medical services, while Mexico is dispatching a military rescue team. Colombia, which also felt the tremors, will send over 60 rescuers and 12 tonnes of humanitarian aid.<\/p>\n

In addition to these efforts, the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies has allocated $2.5 million for recovery initiatives. The Vatican has also contributed, sending initial emergency aid of 100,000 euros ($114,000). Countries like Germany and France are dispatching rescue teams and equipment, with Germany promising six military transport planes and France sending 85 rescue workers.<\/p>\n

The economic impact of the earthquakes is significant, with initial assessments estimating damage between 1% and 7% of Venezuela\u2019s $111 billion GDP. The country faces ongoing challenges due to years of underinvestment and economic sanctions, complicating aid delivery and recovery efforts.<\/p>\n
